Taipei, Oct. 17 (CNA) Japanese private groups are giving away 5,000 T-shirts they have had made as a gesture to thank Taiwan for the aid and generous donations in the wake of the powerful earthquake that hit Japan in March, a visiting Japanese lawmaker said Monday.
Japanese Representative and Renaissance Party founder Yoichi Masuzoe said given the tremendous help Japan has received from Taiwan, these non-government groups decided to make the shirts as a symbol of gratitude.
Masuzoe, who is in Taiwan on a four-day visit that will wrap up Wednesday, made the remarks during a session of a trilateral security conference between Taiwan, Japan and the United States.
Designed by a Japanese illustrator, the shirts feature Chinese characters expressing gratitude for the Taiwanese people and a heart-shaped icon showing the close relationship between the two countries.
The shirts are being distributed to the Japanese public at travel agencies in Japan, and Masuzoe said that "we hope Japanese visitors to Taiwan will wear them during their stays in the country."
The Japanese lawmaker also brought 100 of the shirts to Taiwan to give away to "Taiwanese friends."
Masuzoe is planning to give away some of the T-shirts to students during a series of lectures he is scheduled to give at three Taiwanese universities in the coming days.
