National defense highly dependent on soft power: Ma
Taipei, Oct. 10 (CNA)
President Ma Ying-jeou said Monday at an event after National Day celebrations that the country's defense depends largely on Taiwan's soft power. In his National Day address Monday morning, Ma asserted that "only a strong defense can safeguard Taiwan's security," and he said later at a meeting in Taipei with Taiwanese businessmen based in China that a key part of a strong defense was soft power. Such power, including humanitarian assistance, cultural exchanges and peaceful progress across the Taiwan Strait, had won the world's respect and had successfully helped Taiwan be included in visa waiver programs in 124 countries and territories, the president said. Telling the businessmen that they "are part of Taiwan's soft power," Ma said soft power is an asset for the country and pledged to work to help the country accumulate it to the point that the entire world became a supporter of Taiwan. The event was organized by the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF). (By Kang Shih-jen and Jamie Wang)
