Taiwan's president Ma Ying-jeou announced his ‘golden decade’ vision Monday at the Presidential Office during a press conference that was also attended by his running mate, Premier Wu Den-yih, and Vice-president Vincent Siew. In his speech, Ma unveiled a "golden decade" platform or set of guidelines for Taiwan's development over the next decade.
Ma said the widening wealth gap in Taiwan is a major problem that requires an immediate solution. Some of the goals listed in Ma’s outline include enhancing Taiwan's status in the global economy, creating more job opportunities, developing innovative technologies, adjusting Taiwan’s economic structure and narrowing the island’s wealth gap, as well as creating equal access to medical care and employment.
An integral and competent government is required to efficiently execute these proposed policies, Ma said, adding that his administration will actively carry out anti-corruption audits.
To achieve these objectives, he urges the government to put an end to short-term speculation in the market, provide more affordable housing, amend the existing tax system and improve its social welfare policy.
Commenting on health issues, he said Taiwan’s rates of smoking and traffic deaths need to be reduced, and adults need to exercise more.
He also mentioned that for the first time in ROC’s history, the government will publish an annual human rights report around February of next year based on the standards of the United Nations, since Taiwan has signed the two rights conventions of the UN.
In the sphere of employment, he said the government is trying to increase the labor force participation rate from 58% to 60%.
The president is set to announce more points on his golden decade vision at a later date.
