London, Oct. 10 (CNA) Taiwan garnered one gold, four silver and three bronze medals and 15 honorable-mention "medallions for excellence" at the 41st WorldSkills competition in London Sunday.
Lin San-quei, director-general of the Bureau of Employment and Vocational Training of the Council of Labor Affairs, said Taiwan sent 43 participants to the biennial competition, which attracted over 10,000 participants from 54 countries, both records.
Taiwan's entrants took part in 38 of the 46 skill areas featured at the event, and 60 percent of them won medals, Lin said.
"The participants have learned more about new trends in techniques through the competition, and the event has helped them upgrade their skills," Lin said.
Lo Sheng-pin, a student of National Hsinchu Senior Industrial Vocational School who competed in the sheet metal technology category, won Taiwan's only gold medal.
"I'm both excited and surprised," he said, adding that he was able to observe the techniques of other competitors and was surprised that they performed their routines without the help of a preliminary drawing.
Lin Hsiu-chun, a silver medalist in fashion technology, said she learned a lot from watching and talking to other top designers about fashion issues.
Chang Yin-ting said he was glad to win a silver in electronics but regretted not winning gold. "Overall, the most important thing is that I need to improve my basic skills."
Ku Wen-min, a sliver medalist in floristry, admitted to having mixed feelings over the result.
"When I was training in Taiwan, my teachers had high expectations for me, and I came to the competition with a gold medal as my goal," Ku said. "But this is just a beginning. There's a long road ahead, and I'll continue to work hard."
