New York, Oct. 16 (CNA) Taiwan's first lady Chow Mei-ching told stories to school children and introduced them to traditional paintings at a Chinese school in New Jersey in the United States Sunday.
Earlier in the day, she visited a park with students from the Tai-wu Elementary School in Pingtung County, southern Taiwan, who were traveling with Chow, on the last leg of a five-day U.S. trip that began Oct. 12.
At the Northern New Jersey Chinese Association Chinese School later that day, Chow told stories to students about calligraphy maestro Wang Hsi-chih, who lived during the Jin Dynasty more than 1,600 years ago and who is considered one of the greatest Chinese calligraphers of all time.
Chow also led students in an appreciation of the noted "Along the River During the Qingming Festival," a panoramic painting depicting the hustle and bustle of the capital city of Kaifeng during the rule of Hui Zong in the Northern Song Dynasty.
Also present at the story-telling session was the president's sister Ma Nai-si, who lives in New Jersey.
Chow arrived in New York City Oct. 12 to attend the world premiere of the Taiwan-based Cloud Gate Dance Theatre's new performance, and the Oct. 14 inauguration of the Taiwan Academy, a brainchild of President Ma Ying-jeou that is aimed at spreading Chinese culture with unique Taiwan characteristics.
She was scheduled to depart for Taiwan Oct. 17. (By Leaf Chiang and Scully Hsiao) ENDITEM/J
