Taiwan’s former president Chen Shui-bian sentenced to 18 years in prison
Taiwan’s High Court re-opened a trial yesterday to finalize guilty verdicts for Taiwan’s former President Chen Shui-bian’s corruption charges. The former president has been found guilty of financial fraud and sentenced to 18 years in prison on top of a nine-year deprivation of civil rights and a fine of NT$180 million.
Meanwhile, Chen’s wife Wu Shu-jen was fined NT$120 million in addition to an eight-year deprivation of civil rights. The former president’s son Chen Chih-chung (陳致中) was given a fine of NT$4 million, while his wife Huang Jui-ching (黃睿靚) was fined up to NT$2 million.
The defendants are allowed to appeal the verdicts, and former first lady Wu's attorney announced yesterday his clients had decided to do so.
The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) yesterday claimed the verdicts are being swayed by political motivations, as it has every time the former first family has been found guilty of corruption charges
